Sending … pajamas

Unlike yesterday’s card, most of the cards from last weekend’s Marvelous Masks class were simple and monochromatic. This was the first card, using the Foursquare Decorative Masks pattern I called “X” — it creates something you might expect to see on your dad’s pajamas.

I love to layer vellum on top of a pattern. This stitched circle was popped up to give a frosted feel; if it was flat on top of the “X” panel, it would disappear. The elements on top of the circle were flat adhered to the vellum (using our Grid Paper to keep them straight), then Stampin’ Dimensionals were adhered behind those elements to lift up the circle.

Each Marvelous Masks participant brought an ink pad in her preferred color, and I created samples with some of those colors. However, I started prepping before I even opened the class for registration, so for this card, I used one of my preferred colors: Lost Lagoon!

Petal Park meets Artistic Masks

I had such fun at last weekend’s Marvelous Masks classes! This was the last card we made — or, rather, the last sample we made. Because of the drying time required for the tinted Embossing Paste, participants completed this card at home (I hope!).

I have lots of class samples that I’ll share with you in the coming weeks that I hope will show why I love the Decorative Masks so much. With only a few supplies, you can create backgrounds — as big as a card front or as small as a tag — in your choice of colors. In addition, the very act of creating the panels with the masks is, for me, very soothing. And it just plain makes me happy!

It’s the truth: you must see (and touch!) this card for yourself to see why Embossing Paste is such a cool product. The texture and dimension are pretty amazing. If you’re curious about the ink refill color I used, and why it doesn’t look like Orchid Oasis here, the white Embossing Paste lightens the color significantly. In fact, this looks almost identical to Highland Heather!

Bird’s Eye View: Ombre

A Stampin’ Up! Facebook post for Technique Tuesday the other day caused me to drop what I was doing and start playing! Irina Held, a current Artisan Design Team Member, wrote a tutorial she called “Create Custom Stickers.” As I looked at the tutorial, I quickly realized she was re-introducing an old technique I had used probably 12 years ago (and barely since!).

Bird's Eye View | Foursquare Decorative Masks | This "enameled disc" is a fun technique worth an experiment or two! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

I wouldn’t call this a sticker — it’s more like a disc of faux china. When we did this years ago, we were actually making a seasonal pin (I think it was a holiday image) that got its stability by layering several pieces of cardstock. In the example here (and Irina’s tutorial), the circle is backed with a Foam Adhesive Sheet. It reminds me of the button pins we used to make for clubs and school events when I was a teenager. I believe I still have one in my memory box that urges support for our Fighting Cavaliers!

The technique is this:

  • Stamp and color an image on a scrap of cardstock.
  • Adhere the same-size piece of Foam Adhesive Sheet to the back of the stamped scrap.
  • Die cut the image.
  • Press the stamped side against a juicy VersaMark pad.
  • Pour clear embossing powder over the VersaMark.
  • Heat emboss (I used a “poky tool” on the edge of the disc so it wouldn’t blow around).
  • Allow to cool, then repeat the VersaMark inking, powdering, and heating.
  • If desired, repeat the previous step.
  • Remove the backing of the Foam Adhesive Sheet and add the faux china piece to your card front.

Here you see the shininess of this disk — very much like a piece of china!

Are you curious about the background? If you’ll be attending next weekend’s Marvelous Masks class, your curiosity will be satisfied then!

Striped Quilt: Hello

Did you take advantage of the recent Designer Series Paper sale? Or do you just have lots of paper scraps in your craft area? {cough} Then here’s an idea for you, inspired by Tammy Wilson.

Biggest Wish | Not much stamping here, just a great use of scraps! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

There’s nothing complicated about this June camp card — it’s just a matter of deciding (or choosing) the widths of your strips, then adhering them to a rectangular scrap. This panel measures 4½” x 3¼”, and you can probably tell that we began with one of the strips whose edge goes from corner to corner. After adhering all the strips, we flipped the panel over and trimmed the ends flush with the edges.

I use Biggest Wish so often on cards that are a bit (or a lot) bold. A delicate sentiment just wouldn’t work here. And as far as my choice of paper, I took advantage of the coordination of many of the patterns in the Delightfully Eclectic DSP pack. What will you use?

Bird’s Eye View: Hi

I don’t want to become too reliant on layers and tools. Sometimes it’s a good exercise for me to get back to just SIP: stamps, ink, and paper! This July camp card (CASEd from Amanda Mertz) gave me the opportunity to do just that.

This wasn’t only SIP; I admit we did use one of the Deckled Rectangle dies for the main panel. Just for fun.

All of the birds in this set — actually all the images — are wonderful. I just needed a playful sentiment that fit that corner. Who would have expected to find it in Just My Type?

Just My Type: Thank You

When I have to make duplicates — and I needed them yesterday! — it makes sense to keep things simple. But simple doesn’t mean plain in my stamping. So I think “classic” and “texture” in my design.

Do you recognize these images? The sentiment is from Just My Type; the leaves (fussy cut) are an image from Bird’s Eye View. We used both those sets in camp this month, and I’ll share those cards with you soon.

Get ready for a “stamp-tacular” sale!

Have you been eyeing a stamp set (or two, or three) from the 2023–2024 Annual Catalog? Well, here’s good news for you! On Wednesday, July 19, Stampin’ Up!’s annual 24-Hour Stamp Sale will begin! It will only be here for a limited time, from 12:00 a.m. (MT) to 11:59 p.m. (MT), so prepare to act fast!

I have to say I grit my teeth when Stampin’ Up! springs these one-day sales on me (in an email yesterday). Like some of you, I just put in an order. I don’t feel obligated to buy things just because they’re on sale, so I’ll look at my wish list to see which stamps I need for upcoming events.

But we don’t want anyone to miss out on this opportunity! Both the Marvelous Masks Class and the All-Occasions Stamp-a-Stack have the same ordering incentive: Just from me, for every $50 in product ordered, select any product valued at $10.00 or less for FREE.  In addition, you will receive a Bonus Day coupon, redeemable in August, and a Burgin Buck. Click here to use the July Host Code (QT429JYN) when you are ready to order on July 19. Here’s what else you need to know:

  • The sale will run for 24 hours.
  • All order types qualify for this promotion.
  • There is no limit to how many stamp sets may be purchased.
  • The 15% discount will apply to all stamp sets (but not bundles!) from the 2023–2024 Annual Catalog (excluding host stamp sets).
  • No discount code is necessary—the 15% off discount will be applied automatically.
