Nature’s Prints: Thank You

In my post for last week’s Stamp Review Crew blog hop for Nature’s Prints, I asked if you could tell which three stamps I used in Misty Moonlight ink on this card. Today’s the day I reveal the answer, in case you couldn’t identify them all — keep reading!

Misty Moonlight isn’t the only blue in play here, however. Another stamper used this combination of MM and Boho Blue, and I loved the way it looked.

There is pattern upon pattern on this card, beginning with the Boho Blue background, created with the Foursquare Decorate Masks. I am so looking forward to teaching the upcoming Marvelous Masks Class in early August!

Perhaps the stamp you missed is the “spatter” stamp. I used it (in Misty Moonlight) to color the crinkled seam binding ribbon (sadly retired). You might be surprised by the stamp images that become unidentifiable when stamped randomly and repeatedly!

Nature’s Prints: Best Wishes

After brushing off my White Craft ink pad (unused for years, I think) to create a background for this card, I decided to see how this Maidenhair Fern image would manage the same assignment for another of my Stamp Review Crew blog hop cards. I like it!

Because this is a big stamp, getting an even impression was challenging (OK, impossible). But I just embraced the imperfection. I am not a machine, I keep repeating to myself.

Using a thin strip of Vellum to the left of the main panel and a Vellum eyelet ruffle to the right made this kind of sweet — suitable to celebrate your first granddaughter. I just hope this card finally arrived at my friend’s house; I really could have walked it over there, but I think it’s still a thrill to find something personal in the mailbox, don’t you?

Nature’s Prints: You’re on My Mind

I had every intention of posting this card earlier this week, but then all of the Stampin’ Up! promotions jumped to the front of the line. Did you take advantage of them yesterday?

Are you ever overwhelmed with color combinations when you begin to design? If you suffer from the “paralysis of analysis,” I suggest starting with shades of just one color. Limiting my choices to Old Olive and Mossy Meadow meant this Stamp Review Crew blog hop card went together quite quickly — and if my goal is to get a card in the mail, that’s important.

You may notice that the matted panel is off-center. I did this so that I could accommodate the sentiment. And for both the sentiment and the Maidenhair Fern sprig, I let the elements “bleed” off the edges of the panel. This feels more comfortable and less cramped than forcing them within the “window.”

I noticed that other people who have used this image call it a Ginkgo branch. Perhaps I am wrong, but this doesn’t look like the Ginkgo leaves we have here. When I used Google Lens on this image, it suggested Maidenhair Fern. So I’ll stick with that until someone can offer additional clarification!

Stamp Review Crew: Nature’s Prints

Happy July, stampers! I am pleased to welcome you to another Stamp Review Crew blog hop. I believe this is only my fourth SRC appearance this year, but rest assured these hops are offered on the first and third Mondays of each month. Today we’re taking a look at Nature’s Prints, with its corresponding Natural Prints dies (no longer offered in a bundle):

158793 Nature's Prints

Click the banner above — or here — to see the bloggers participating today. (Remember that unless a stamper’s blog has been deleted, you should be able to see every post for the Stamp Review Crew.) Although I’m first in the lineup of international bloggers today, the hop is a loop, so you may have just enjoyed the work of Ellen Woodbridge.

I didn’t intentionally set out to do a series of monochromatic cards, but that’s the way it turned out! This card is pretty simple, with just a bit of texture behind the Maidenhair Fern. It would be perfect to make in multiples. This is in the mail to one of my stamping BFFs, as I was reflecting on all the good times we have had over stamps, ink, and paper!

My second card celebrates another stamping friend’s most recent grandchild, born just last week. It’s for Grandpa and Grandma, not the baby (or her parents), so the sentiment is not traditional. Nor is the image, for that matter, but the baby’s nursery is decorated with a “sloth” theme, and that image is not in this set!

Finally, an experiment in blue. This card is a bit boho, and Boho Blue indeed is the base. There are three stamps from Nature’s Prints in Misty Moonlight — can you spot them? (Big hint there.) I like the way these blues play together!

BTW, I will post each of my cards later this week, with details and product lists, so you are not delayed today. Now you are off to find out what Mike Funke has done with this set at Stampin- Style. See you later this week!

Inked & Tiled: Celebrate

Of all the June stamp camp cards, this one probably made me smile the most. (Or did I say that about another one?) Inspired by the stunning Inked Botanicals Designer Series Paper (on sale through June 30), I used Lost Lagoon and white ink on the Lost Lagoon panel:

Inked & Tiled | Charming Sentiments | It is so satisfying to create a beautiful background with just two inks! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

That’s it: random, all-over stamping with two stamps, two colors. It is so satisfying to create a background like this! Of course, it doesn’t end there; knowing I wanted to use gold as an accent (but being a bit stingy with my Gold Foil), I tried Wild Wheat as a mat and was so pleased with the look. Who would have thought?

The flower centers were accented with tiny dots of Metallic Enamel Effects Basics in Gold. I love the two Enamel Effects assortments, but I often forget to move my card out of harm’s way until the dots dry. It works very well to assemble the entire card, then apply the Enamel Effects. And move the card to another part of the table for 20 minutes or so! (Tip: hold the bottle tip-down and shake it, then keep the bottle straight up and down as you squeeze out tiny amounts.)

I made several of these cards for our daughter-in-law to give as graduation cards, but it works for a wedding, too.

The die I used for the sentiment is from the limited-edition Apple Blossoms dies. You can still find it (at huge savings) in the Clearance Rack (and the Apple Harvest stamp set is in the 2023-2024 Annual Catalog).

Timeless Arrangements: Triplet

To be honest, I am a little intimidated by the Timeless Arrangements bundle. I have seen stunning projects using it, but … I am hanging back, trying to figure out where I will go with it. The card on page 154 of the 2023-2024 Annual Catalog is one of those stunning projects. But of all the details on that card, it was the little flower image that I couldn’t take my eyes off.

Timeless Arrangements | This is a powerful bundle, but I'll start simple with this small flower image. Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

So I started simply, with a tried-and-true triplet layout. I’ve already done a couple of these cards with different colors for the card base and flowers. They go together quickly — it’s just enough coloring to be fun, not tedious! This is a birthday card for a friend, but it’s certainly suitable for other occasions. Before I put this in the envelope, I brushed each flower with Wink of Stella for some shimmer.

I was on the fence about Moody Mauve, but it is beautiful IRL! This is why I buy the assortment pack of In Colors cardstock — I can test drive each color before investing in ink and Stampin’ Blends.

Circle Sayings: Shells

When I saw a Circle Sayings card by Charlet Mallett, a member of the Stampin’ Up! Artisan Team, I knew I had to try my hand at something similar for camp this month. I’m not saying that these shells exist in nature, but who can be sure?

Circle Sayings | The circle on this card was inspired by Artisan Charlet Mallett. Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

Other than CASEing the stamped circle on Charlet’s card, I went my own way. I thought the “flowers” folder from the Basics 3D set (available in Online Exclusives) looked something like the starfish in the stamped image, so I used that to emboss the Pool Party strip. The striped piece of vellum reminded me of a striped beach towel on the sand. This is how it goes with me — sometimes it works, and sometimes it’s plain awful!

There’s a bit of a trick to getting the shells (a semi-circle image) stamped: Stamp the image once on a scrap, then punch it out so that there is little margin to the edge. Then stamp the other half. You might have luck stamping one half-circle, then the other, but I found when I punched out the images, it was not really a circle!

Darling Details: Happy Birthday

When I made this card, I pretty much immediately created something similar for camp this month. And here it is, sporting a hobnail-glass dots background, happy and darling!

Darling Details | I played this "sweet," but changing the colors and the embossed panel will turn this card into something (almost) totally different! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

Have you ever wondered why using a foam mat under your work is useful when stamping with a photopolymer stamp, but not necessarily always? It’s clear (hah!) that those stamps do not have their own foam “padding,” unlike red rubber stamps. With a solid image, like the stamp for the “filler” of the flower, you want to be able to press firmly and evenly. Without a pad under the scrap, there’s a good chance the stamped image would have been missing areas (even taking into account that it is not a totally solid image to begin with).

However, generally speaking, using a line image doesn’t present a problem with obtaining a good stamped impression. Take the flower outline on this card: all those lines will hit the paper equally (assuming your stamping surface is solid). Ditto with the leaf outline and filler and the sentiment. So I rarely use a pad underneath my work when stamping line images.

For the flower on this card, we stamped the outline first in Berry Burst ink (I usually start with the darker image of a two-step image) on a Basic White scrap. Placing a foam pad under the Grid Paper, we inked up the filler image in Berry Burst and stamped off directly on the Grid Paper. With the Basic White scrap placed on the Grid Paper (and the foam pad still underneath), we stamped the filler over the stamped outline image.

I hope this makes sense; feel free to ask me to clarify anything I’ve said. But here are a couple more points:

  • But does it cause a problem if you use a pad for line images? No, so if it’s easier, consistently use a pad.
  • What do I use for a pad? For years I have used a foam-backed vinyl placemat. As you can imagine, the foam is not very thick, just enough to allow you to get some pressure when you stamp. The design on the placemat is quite horrid, but I think I paid $1 for it — and cut it into four pieces! If you can find one (perhaps at a dollar store), it’s worth the dollar! Or $1.25.
