Foursquare Decorative Masks: Happy Birthday Ombré

Over the weekend we moved from “back to school” to “autumn” in our home décor. I love collecting vintage seasonal items, like books and china, that we display on tables and mantels. However, I really don’t like to rush the seasons or holidays, so you will not find any Halloween or Thanksgiving items quite yet.

This card, from the Marvelous Masks class last month, seems like it could be Halloween-y (well, except for that big sentiment), but the Calypso Coral and Basic Gray keep it from being so. Pumpkin Pie accented with Basic Black would take it in another direction.

The example here was practice in creating an ombré background using the “Filigree” mask from the Foursquare Decorative Masks set. It takes a few tries to get the feel of this, but I like to mentally divide the height of the cardstock panel into quarters. (If this is challenging to visualize, make some pencil marks on your Grid Paper.) Beginning with an all-over, light application of color (here, Calypso Coral), I then move down to quarter #2 and apply a heavier application all the way down the panel. Quarters #3 and #4 follow with even heavier applications. The result is a subtle gradation of intensity with no noticeable line between.
