Softly Stippled: Filled with Joy

For inspiration, especially when I seem to make the same card over and over, I look to the sketch challenges other stampers post. That was the case with this card from the recent Stamp Review Crew blog hop featuring items from the January-February 2024 Sale-A-Bration brochure.

Want to make a card like this? Cut four pieces of patterned paper 1¼” x 4″ eacg. One of those pieces will be the horizontal piece at the top of the card. Cut 1/8″ off the end of each of the three remaining pieces, which will be the verticals. Then it’s just a matter of flat adhering the pieces with equal margins (1/8″, to be specific) around each piece. Turn this layout on its side and see how that changes things!

This little ribbon treatment is a favorite of mine. Tie a bow from a length of twine or trim (something not too bulky); set aside. Knot a piece of supple ribbon around a card front or panel but do not tighten the knot. Slip the bow under the knot (I use a crochet hook to catch it) and then tighten the knot.

Softly Stippled: Hello

What do you do when life hands you scraps? Make this card, of course! Unless you have veggie scraps from making soup, but you know that.

This is my first card from yesterday’s Stamp Review Crew blog hop. The strips are all the same width (3/4″) to avoid too many decisions. I adhered them to a 4¼” x 5½” scrap, then used the Deckled Rectangle die to trim the piece and line up the corners. When I have done “patchwork” cards before, I often emboss the finished panel with an all-over subtle design (like the retired Tasteful Textful folder). But there is a lot of pattern going on here, so I skipped that step.

I had finished my projects, finished writing the blog post, and finished checking the links … and it dawned on me that this was a stamp blog hop and I had used the Softly Stippled Designer Series Paper as my focus. However, since our organizer (Holly), also used a Sale-A-Bration DSP, I guess I will not be kicked out of the group.

I love the colors in this paper and the fact that there are so many ways you can combine the patterns!

I guess I should have used a Deckled Circle for the sentiment, to coordinate with the background panel, but I had already taken off the original sentiment and forgot about it. I know there are tricks (e.g., dental floss) to remove an element from a project without damage, but I’m not very successful with that. The best I can do is camouflage or conceal! How about you?

Stamp Review Crew: Bonus Hop SAB #1

Who doesn’t love a bonus? Because there are five Mondays in January, there’s a third Stamp Review Crew hop this month! Looking around the list of blogs for today’s hop, I’m thrilled to see so many bloggers participating; if you’ve hopped with us before, you’ll recognize them — from near and far — showcasing their favorite product(s) in the January-February 2024 Sale-A-Bration brochure.

Ever since Stampin’ Up! changed its annual Sale-A-Bration schedule to just a single two-month period, I’ve been nervous. How can I possibly get as much focused creative work accomplished in such a short time? (And never mind that the January-April 2024 Mini Catalog also needs attention!) The answer to my concern has been simple: Designer Series Paper. I love all the DSP in this publication, especially when they are mixed and matched with products from the 2023-2024 Annual Catalog and the Mini. Today I’m focusing on Softly Stippled Designer Series Paper, designed to coordinate with the Stippled Roses bundle (which I don’t have). Note that I will be posting my cards individually this week — and a bonus Softly Stippled card — so I can give you some additional information and share the product lists.

Just before me on the hop list is the blog of Stacey March — don’t miss her creativity!

My first card using Softly Stippled DSP is a simple way to use up scraps. There are so many ways to combine these patterns, deciding on the placement of the strips is the hardest part of this layout — but not that hard. It’s worth making several variations of this card in one sitting. The sentiment is from another Sale-A-Bration offering, Heartfelt Hellos.

This birthday card is based on a recent sketch challenge I saw. I love Wild Wheat, a 2023-2025 In Color, and how beautiful it is with gold. The Softly Stippled floral pattern here is the same as the Calypso Coral-based pattern on the first card. So pretty! This sentiment is from Heartfelt Hexagon.

Finally, another birthday card. This one, for the girlfriend of on of our grandsons, is a bit more dramatic than the first two cards and I think suits her style. I used the same floral pattern on the envelope flap.

Now you’re off to see what Betty Traciak has created on her blog, Kitty Stamp. Enjoy!

Don’t forget to return here for details on my two cards this week!

Hooray for Surprises: Sending Lots of Love

The sample on page 70 of the Stampin’ Up! January-April 2024 Mini Catalog was the inspiration for this January camp card. The white embossed background perplexed several campers: “Where do the little dots come from?” It’s not often that we heat emboss the negative of a design! The embossed leaves are colored with a Stampin’ Blends marker, one of my favorite techniques (see another example of it here).

I had fully intended to create a “pull the tab” interactive card — kind of the whole point of the dies — but it occurred to me that (a) I wouldn’t be able to demonstrate more than once per session per table, and (b) there would be no way for stampers to test their card without ruining it. So I’ll have to think this through again, as I love this concept.

But I also love this stamp set with its terrific images and sentiments. I will keep playing with this bundle before the end of this mini. If I’m lucky, it will stick around.

I love the pun of “sending” and the Perennial Postage dies. I’m easily amused.

Bee My Valentine: Bee Mine

I hope CASEing someone is the sincerest form of flattery! I saw a card by Melissa Davies and knew I wanted to include it in my January camps.

I especially loved that flagged leafy Old Olive strip; you could easily transform this for another occasion with an alternate sentiment.

I used the smaller of the two hearts on the Bee Builder punch for these Sweet Sorbet accents. I found it very speedy to punch hundreds of them — which is about what I needed for the camp cards!

Perennial Postage: Loved Beyond Measure

I couldn’t resist pairing this wonderful sentiment from Perennial Postage with the “ruler” pattern from Trusty Toolbox. It’s one of the Sale-A-Bration Designer Series Paper sets, free with a qualifying order through the end of February (but only while supplies last).

This was one of my January camp cards. I was really happy with this layout (a duplicate of this Jingle Jump card), but when it came time to cut the camp packets for participants, I realized I had made a big mistake: this was all I had left of this fun dotted pattern! So I improvised with the large dot pattern, also from Delightfully Eclectic DSP.

I have earned all the Designer Series Paper offerings from this year’s Sale-A-Bration — they are all wonderful and not to be missed!

Bee My Valentine: Bee Mine

This is what I call a very bzzzy card! There’s way more going on here than you usually see from me, but using the Bee Mine suite, it was inevitable! This is my second card from the Stamp Review Crew blog hop last week, which featured the Bee My Valentine stamp set.

I received a card from a stampin’ buddy with something I called a recessed window layout, so I thought I’d give it a try here. I guess it’s really just a big frame, isn’t it? It’s simple to accomplish unless you are using a plaid piece of DSP inside the frame, which must be perfectly straight (in my world, anyway) before you adhere the frame on top using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Simply punching out two sets of large hearts from Vellum created these fragile-looking wings.

Bee My Valentine: Love You

Because we have been homebound during our extreme weather, I have taken advantage of my free time to get some projects crossed off the list. Monday’s job was to shorten three pairs of curtains, but a territorial dispute arose at the sewing machine. Score: needle 1, finger 0. The good news is that with some first aid, a nitrile glove, and Tylenol, I could resume hemming. The bad news is that it’s hard to type with only 9 functional fingers. But here I am.

This was one of my cards from the Stamp Review Crew blog hop earlier this week. I enjoy using a tag as the focal point of a card front; it’s so fun to use a small canvas, and I ran across a picture in my “Your memories from this day” feed that inspired me to do this even more often.

I pulled out two neglected products to use here: the “hobnail” embossing folder from the Basics 3D set (an Online Exclusives product) and the pack of Pearlized Enamel Effects Basics, which I used for the flower centers.

The clever thing about the Bee Builder punch is that all three shapes are usable for things other than bee parts; I used the larger heart to punch out the front sentiment. It’s good to have hearts to punch!

Stamp Review Crew: Bee My Valentine

Hello from wintery north central Illinois! We had around 10″ of snow Friday and Saturday, then woke up yesterday to a temp of -15°F, with a wind chill of -31. I am happy to be in a warm and safe place (also grateful for our neighbor’s help), still listening to Christmas music.

If you are new to the Stamp Review Crew blog hops, we are Stampin’ Up! demonstrators from, well, all over! Our hops are the first and third Mondays of the month (with an occasional bonus hop). Blog hop posts are available even after the hop; click the banner, above, to see the lineup for this hop.

Bee My Valentine is the set featured in this Stamp Review Crew blog hop. This set is adorable, especially when combined with the clever Bee Builder Punch. You can find this bundle and all the products in the Bee Mine Suite on pages 8-10 of the January-April 2024 Mini Catalog.

Note that I will be posting my cards individually this week so I can give you some additional information and share the product lists.

The hop is a loop, so you may be coming here from the blog of Stacey Marsh. Isn’t she a wonderful stamper?

Although there’s plenty of valentine-y potential in this set, I actually created this happy thank-you card first. (It will post on FB and IG this week, but the recipient won’t know it’s for her until it arrives in her mailbox!) This “hobnail” embossing folder has been idling for weeks in my cutting room, after I felt I was using too much, but I dusted it off to complement the edges of the die-cut panel.

My second card is a valentine, but for whom? This is livelier than my typical designs, but I wanted to use the Designer Series Paper with this recessed window layout. I didn’t realize until I was assembling the card that the bee appears as though it’s had a bit too much holiday honey!

Filled with Happiness: Happy Birthday

So much holiday fun, so much weather, so much kitchen activity — but now it’s time to get back downstairs! Actually, I was preparing for January camps (which I have been able to hold despite the alarming forecasts), and before I did a cleanup, I made a few birthday cards using Filled with Happiness.

This is a wonderful set, one I added to my 2023-2024 wish list right away, but it is not part of a bundle. You can see the Modern Oval punch on page 76 of the January-April 2024 Mini Catalog. It’s perfect for this stamp set, of course, or for lots of other images.

This background paper, a free item from Sale-A-Bration this year, is a pretty counterpoint to the stamped and colored image. I remember when Stampin’ Up! had fabric in its line; this print would be perfect for that.

Coloring this center image required me to have the Color Lifter at hand. It always is, truthfully, and I’m always amazed how effectively it fixes my slips.
