Timeless Tropical: Eden

When I get a new Stampin’ Up! product (or bundle, or suite), it can be hard for me to break away from the marketing materials for the product line. Others have the same challenge, apparently, as I see many creations using the same colors and layouts. That’s when buyer’s remorse sets in and I wonder why I bought it in the first place because I have utterly no idea what to do with it.

If I don’t panic (and simply relax), I can get past that by trying totally different colors, as I shared in this card. And sometimes this is the result:

Timeless Tropical | Eden | How's this for drama? I wanted to go in a different direction from the beautiful Ever Eden paper ... it worked! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

This card also started with a piece I cut — the large, oval wreath — and couldn’t find a use for. (Sounds like my worktable is the Island of Misfit Toys, doesn’t it?) I worked on this birthday card over several days, each time laying something on it until I was pleased with the result.

After the card was “done” I thought it was still missing something, so I added that ferny rectangle die cut in Pear Pizzazz, trimming it to nestle under the adhered sentiment pieces.

Something I’ve been doing recently is adding a front piece, barely smaller than the card front, that’s embossed. I really don’t like embossing a card front, because (a) it softens the cardstock, making it difficult to stand up, and (b) I can’t emboss a top-fold card and get the embossing right-side-up. (Perhaps this is the explanation for the direction of the Merry Melody folder that I talked about in this post.)

This card is kind of a departure from my usual style, but I love the way it looks. It had plenty of bulk to it, so the Post Office (and recipient) can thank me for the extra postage on the (stamped) envelope. Happy birthday, dear friend!

Christmas Season: Joyful Christmas

There’s something about pinecones I just can’t resist. Ever since we have lived in this house, I have nestled pinecones in and amongst my collection of inexpensive spooners and other footed glassware for the fall and winter mantel in the living room. This arrangement looks beautiful during the dark evenings, even from the street.

And so, if there’s a pinecone in a stamp set, I’m flagging the catalog page! In the July-December 2021 Mini Catalog, I was immediately drawn to the Christmas Season bundle on page 18, and created this September Jingle Jump card:

Christmas Season | Merriest Moments | Knit Together | Let heaven and nature sing! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

This is not a 10-minute card, but still easy. Change the sentiment and it becomes a beautiful winter birthday card.

When I designed this card, it was the first time I had used the Knit Together background stamp. Love at first sight! I’m not sure I’ve ever used it in any other way than tone-on-tone; the effect is amazing.

This pinecone is the perfect example of the power of two-step stamping. In the “old days,” we had to do that using a wish and a prayer, but now we have photopolymer stamps that help alignment and the Stamparatus to ensure perfect results every time. Still, nature is not perfect, and so I don’t fuss too much over an image like this. I found it easiest to stamp the dark (shadow) image first, then the lighter one.

Merriest Moments: Thinking of You

This couldn’t be more different from yesterday’s card using the same stamp set. OK, it could, but you’ve got to admit this version is big on drama!

Merriest Wishes | This die cut is stunning against Blackberry Bliss -- or any color, really! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

This die cut from Merriest Frames is stunning on Blackberry Bliss — or probably any color! I did emboss the BB panel, as it made the placement of the white die cut so much easier. If you don’t do that, you’ll need to make sure the inside frame is straight.

My habit is to cut the frame, then emboss it; it seems to me that other stampers do it differently. Also, I think using Thick Basic White provides a deeper embossing.

As you can see below, the Merriest Frames Hybrid Embossing Folder contains both the dies (poinsettias, holly leaves, leafy frames, and inside stitched frame) and the 3D folder to emboss the leafy frame. It’s amazing, really.

This bundle has been fabulous for both quick (Jingle Jump) and more complex cards. In fact, even though my Christmas cards are finished, I am sort of sad to see the July-December 2021 Mini Catalog retire on January 3. However, I’m expecting the next mini and Sale-A-Bration catalogs in my mailbox this week, and I know how fickle my stamping heart can be!

Merriest Moments: Joy

See a scrap, make a card! In this case, I had the small, rectangular, ferny die cut from the Eden die set sitting on my table, purposeless. What if …

To create the roundish shape, I simply trimmed and bent the straight sides of the die cut to fit around the circle. Anticipating the difficulty of adhering this piece, I had applied a piece of Adhesive Sheet to the cardstock before die cutting it. Good idea! It’s not perfect, but what wreath is?

I was thrown by a curious aspect of this pretty Merry Melody embossing folder. You probably know to feed a folder into your Cut & Emboss machine with the hinge in first. However, the top of the design on this folder is at the bottom of the folder, not the top. You can tell by the position of the treble and bass clef at the beginning of each staff. But if you don’t include those on your embossed piece, you might use it upside down on your card. The key (haha!) is the dots — they should be on the right side of the note.

Did you know that this music is Joy to the World? Of course, unless you see the whole thing, you can ignore that and use it on a birthday card — or at least I will!

Next week is camp week in November

The November camp is a bit different, as my way of letting you know how grateful I am for your business!  Your $15 registration fee covers all supplies and materials for five cards with envelopes, step-by-step printed instructions with pictures, and an Acetate Card Box with a coordinating belly band so you can give this pack of multi-purpose cards as a gift.  I’m sorry, there is no option for an additional set for you to make this month.

In addition to some other products, these cards will use the Eden’s Garden cling stamp set and Eden dies, early-release products from the January–June 2022 Mini Catalog, as well as the Ever Eden 12″ x 12″ Specialty Designer Series Paper. See the Eden’s Garden Collection pdf flyer here.

To register, contact me by Sunday, November 7, so I can be sure to have enough materials.  Pre-payment is not required.

Please bring your own adhesive (I suggest both glue and tape) and scissors.  I would love to clean and sharpen your scissors while you are at my house!  It is your choice not to wear a mask if you are not vaccinated, but you are responsible for your own health; the homeowner is not liable for your welfare.  Hand sanitizer and wipes will be available for everyone to use.

Don’t forget my special offer through November 30 only:  Order the Eden’s Garden Bundle (#157832, $52.00) and Ever Eden Specialty Designer Series Paper (#159996, $15.00), using Host Code DPDJFGCP, and I’ll give you a FREE spool of Gold 1/4″ Shimmer Ribbon from the Annual Catalog (page 140)!

Eden’s Garden: Let’s Celebrate You

When DH asks me for a card, my first instinct is not to go through my card boxes — unless I am really crunched for time. Instead, if I am working with a new set of products, I think, “How can I take this in a different direction?”

So, with a workspace full of Eden’s Garden items, I turned my back on the Ever Eden 12″ x 12″ Specialty Designer Series Paper and re-used a Jingle Jump card layout in a dramatically different colorway.

Eden's Garden | Celebrate Sunflowers | Knit Together | One of my go-to card designs is to combine a floral with a geometric. Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

When I was pretty sure I knew what I wanted to do, I made two cards. The thank-you card my husband needed used “much gratitude” from Heartfelt Wishes (may it live forever!), but was otherwise identical to this one.

Eden's Garden | Celebrate Sunflowers | Knit Together | One of my go-to card designs is to combine a floral with a geometric. Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

My secrets for a simple card:

  • Use one color (here, complementary blues).
  • Combine a floral print with a geometric or linear one.
  • Re-use a favorite layout.

Although I really, really love the Ever Eden paper, I am a stamper at heart. What images do you have that could work here?

Christmas Season: Season’s Greetings

As I’ve said before, my goal for Jingle Jump* cards is that they take only about 10 minutes to complete. Sometimes I’m so in love with a design that I don’t want to make it any easier, but this one nailed it! (*My Jingle Jump events — finished for 2021 — are “stamp-a-stack” camps. The format is like an open house, where stampers come whenever they want during their session, work at their own pace, and make at least 10 cards. I often hold similar events early in the new year for all-occasion cards. Watch for them!)

This simple and classic Christmas card is how I roll; stampers liked it, too! The embossed background panel was made with the snowflake folder from Wintry 3D, a pack of two narrow folders designed for the Mini Cut & Emboss. We embossed the top part of the panel first, then rotated it and embossed the bottom half. If there was an overlap or gap in the embossing, it was concealed by the sentiment label.

I love the Distinktive images in Christmas Season. No need for any work to achieve shading, as it is built in to the image! Occasionally a stamper might think she’s not getting a good impression, but checking the label for the stamp shows that it’s just the intended artistic effect. Be sure to look for the Distinktive logo by the description of a stamp set. You’ll find other examples on pages 38, 46, and 60 of the July-December 2021 Mini Catalog.

Introducing Eden’s Garden

Beginning tomorrow, November 2, you can enjoy the beautiful and bountiful Eden’s Garden Collection.  Stems, sprigs, berries, and twigs abound in this collection — allowing you to create projects that span the seasons!

Two products, the Eden’s Garden cling stamp set and the coordinating Eden dies, will be offered in the January–June 2022 Mini Catalog (individually and as a bundle with 10% savings).  Additional products, including the stunning Ever Eden 12″ x 12″ Specialty Designer Series Paper, are available only during the Eden’s Garden promotion from November 2 through January 3, while supplies last.  Again, the Eden’s Garden bundle will be in the next Mini, but the additional products in the Collection will not!

See the Eden’s Garden Collection pdf flyer here.

Eden's Garden | For my first inking of this sneak peek set, I used random stamping for the background panel. Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

This was my first creation with the Eden’s Garden set. I will admit that I have never been more nervous about cutting into Designer Series Paper than I was with the Ever Eden Specialty paper. So I decided to start with random stamping the background panel and envelope flap. (For technique tips, see my Random Stamping video here.)

I also wanted to start with colors that were different than the DSP, so I used a large dose of Crumb Cake (even though it may not look like it’s that color) and just a sliver of Evening Evergreen.

I have now recovered from my fear of slicing up the DSP! You’ll be using it this month in camp when you create an Acetate Card Box with five cards and envelopes — feel free to give this pack of multi-purpose cards as a gift or keep it for yourself!

Special offer through November 30 only:  Order the Eden’s Garden Bundle (#157832, $52.00) and Ever Eden Specialty Designer Series Paper (#159996, $15.00), using Host Code DPDJFGCP, and I’ll give you a FREE spool of Gold 1/4″ Shimmer Ribbon from the Annual Catalog (page 140)!

Seasons of Fun: Pumpkin girl

I don’t normally send any Halloween cards, and so we make next to none of them in camp. This was an exception, as I couldn’t resist this little girl!

This little blondie made me think of my younger sister, if only for the hair color. If she ever had a perm, well, you won’t hear about it from me. And hopefully, she’ll extend me the same courtesy!

I have very fond memories of dressing up for H’ween and circling the block with bag in hand, hoping for the “good stuff”! Whenever it’s a cold, misty, dark evening here, I call it a Halloween night.

As I did with Peter’s card earlier this week, I colored her face and hands with the Early Espresso Watercolor Pencil and outlined the image with a Light Granite Gray Stampin’ Blends marker to make it pop off the white circle. We used three different orange markers for the pumpkins and two different yellows for the hair — this is the fun of coloring for me, all the experimenting!

Hope your Halloween brings more treats than tricks!

Beauty of Friendship: Autumn Thinking of You

Despite the cool and rainy day, we took a drive Sunday afternoon. We were trying to locate a farm we looked at years ago, when we considered rural life. I thought I knew where it was, and my husband thought he knew. We drove for miles and miles, crisscrossing the countyside. We eventually located the property, and it looked … sad and neglected.

During the tour, we noticed the trees that have been changing — and I need only look out the dining room window to see beautiful examples right here in our neighborhood! This camp card (inspired by Cindy Elam) seemed unseasonal when we made it a few weeks ago, but now it happily feels appropriate.

I love the way you can create so many variations on autumn foliage with this set. Everyone needs a good, all-purpose tree set, and this one is mine! I enjoy multi-step stamping, and this set is pretty forgiving. It’s art, right? And nature!

Beauty of Friendship | No matter the way you experience autumn in your area, this stamp set can celebrate with you! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

I appreciate the versatility of the dies, as well. Always glad for more tags and labels for sentiments (although this one is not from the Beautiful Trees die set).

One of my stampers said she liked the Vellum panel, which was simply run through the Cut & Emboss with a folder. Not only do I find the C&E a much better die cutter than my old machine, I am pleased that it embossed consistently (no light areas) and did not crack the Vellum. This may be because this Timber folder is 3D and thus a heavier plastic — I may need to do some experiments on this! Meanwhile, after an intense weekend of Jingle Jump, I have ordered another Cut & Emboss to help when I have groups. My old cutter will be retired to the storage area of the basement, until some day I look at it and wonder why I even kept it!
