C.O.D. #5: CASE the catalog

For my C.O.D. challenge today, I chose the card at the bottom of page 11 in the January-June 2020 Mini Catalog:

This Stampin’ Up! card features the palm trees image from Timeless Tropical, but of course this sample is not way back in that part of the mini! (It’s actually showing off the sentiment, from Thanks for the Laughs.) It just proves that I need to look at every sample in a catalog for my inspiration! Here’s my prettier-in-real-life version (how I wish I could get lighting like the professionals use!):

Because I have a particular recipient/occasion in mind for this card next week, I substituted a sentiment from Under My Umbrella. I colored the trees with the “direct to rubber” technique, coloring with Stampin’ Write markers directly on the rubber, breathing on the stamp to moisten the ink, then stamping. It’s always a surprise, and never the same twice! I wonder if the Stampin’ Up! artist actually used a marker on the stamped image for more control.

See those little speckles? I looked and looked through my sets to find a tasteful little ink spatter — not snow, or fallen leaves, or confetti, or something that looked like a cooking accident. I just know I have one somewhere. But where?

C.O.D. #5

Wow, it’s the fifth Challenge of the Day here! As long as I can, I’ll be offering challenges on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I hope you’ll play along!

C.O.D. #5: CASE the catalog

You probably know that to CASE means to Copy And Share Everything, or essentially duplicate someone else’s work. But it can also mean Copy And Selectively Edit, starting with an image and substituting items as needed.

It’s so easy for me to overlook the catalog samples. Even with sticky tags on the pages, I sometimes wonder which image was appealing, or why!

So, based on your supplies, re-create one of the samples from either the Stampin’ Up! 2019-2020 Annual Catalog or the January-June 2020 Mini Catalog and replicate it with the product you have.

Rules: The only rule is to use Stampin’ Up! products exclusively. Create your project, photograph it, then include it in a comment in the C.O.D. #5 post at the Heartfelt Inkspiration Facebook page. Be sure to cite the page number of the image you’re CASEing. Your deadline is the end of the day. I’ll aim to post my entry by then, also.

Happy Birthday to You: Birthday Cake

Well, this is it: the end of another Sale-A-Bration season! And, I think it’s fair to say, the most unusual SAB ever. Often when we reach this last day, I feel I haven’t wrung everything out of the Sale-A-Bration offerings that I could have. This year is no exception, although we’ve used SAB products more than I’ve shown you. So expect to see products in upcoming posts that are no longer available.

I just have to share, and this was one of my first — and favorite — cards I made. I made it for February camps, yes, but also for our neighbor’s 80th birthday. Her party was February 29th, and doesn’t that seem like a lifetime ago!

This was over the top for me, but not for the birthday girl — it suited her perfectly! And if I loved this set from the beginning, when the coordinating dies were introduced, I knew it would stay on my shelves forever.

Here you see the bit of Seaside Spray sponged where the cake would be adhered. Just that bit of shading provided a lovely contrast so there wasn’t so much white.

I could color these flowers all day long and not repeat a color combination. OK, maybe an exaggeration, but not by much! The detail here shows you how I use Stampin’ Blends markers; I color most of my flowers just this way.

And I’ve said this before, but never underestimate the power of just a little bit of sparkle! These “sprig” die cuts are the perfect little touch, and you can find similar dies in other sets.

C.O.D. #4: Use a sponge

Here’s what my card looks like for today’s challenge:

Earlier I gave you some ideas how to use a sponge for this challenge — I decided to combine two ideas in one operation by using a Sponge Brayer to create this ombré background.

This is a lot of purple, even for me! And the color is prettier than in this photo, I think. Purple Posy ink (but not paper) has been pulled from the 2019-2021 In Color collection due to quality issues. I never actually had a customer experience problems, nor did I.

The brayering was simple to do. I adhered the Whisper White panel to my Grid Paper so it wouldn’t shift, then used painter’s tape to secure the mask over it. To avoid washing the brayer between colors, I started with the lightest color then rolled off as much ink as I could on scratch paper before moving to the next color.

C.O.D. #4

The fourth Challenge of the Day is simple, but it doesn’t have to be!

“Use a sponge” is a pretty broad challenge, right? Some ideas: sponge an ombré background, sponge over a mask (a stencil), or use a sponge brayer to color ribbon. I’m actually using more than one of those ideas. What will you do?

C.O.D. #3: Create a project using a sketch challenge

The sketch from Freshly Made Sketches for this edition of the Challenge of the Day looked familiar to me. I wondered, Do I use it a lot? Have I used it recently?

So I started looking, and in the process of cleaning out my stash of cards (and giving many to my neighbor for her church’s card ministry), I found this one from six years ago. I am so glad I started photographing every camp card and have kept it up for 15 years! Oh, and I’m very, very happy that every file I create is backed up to the cloud as soon as I create it, with no action needed on my part. (I use Carbonite for this.)

This card was from the period when I offered a “technique ring”: at the monthly camp I’d present a technique that would be used for at least one project and a card that would be punched. I have 26 cards on my ring — how about you?

This is the card I designed for C.O.D. #3, and you can see I was influenced by the card above — so much that I reversed the sketch! As you know, that’s permissible for a sketch challenge, but I had to laugh because someone had mentioned that very thing before I realized I had done the same!

I’m sorry that this Sale-A-Bration paper sold out (not once, but twice). The black-and-white side of each paper is so useful; glad I have scraps left! This particular pattern is perfect for coloring, as I showed you here.

Because I never grow tired of it, I embossed the Rococo Rose panel with Scripty, an embossing folder whose name sounds like a cartoon character, right?

Just completed a few minutes ago, this card is in the mail to one of my stampers. I promise to send every one of my Challenge of the Day cards. How about you?

Our third Challenge of the Day is a classic!

I’ve talked before about using sketches for inspiration, and the folks at Freshly Made Sketches provide plenty! Here’s their sketch challenge for this week:

If you check out their post here, you’ll see that they have a contest. Feel free to submit your entry there, but at least check out the projects that other people have made. What a variety of interpretations! As you can see, you don’t have to take the sketch literally!

C.O.D. #2: Create a project using a color you really don’t care for

Did you guess which 2019-2021 In Color I really don’t like? It’s Pineapple Punch! It’s too bright and has too much green in it for me. (If you love it, I’m happy for you both!) So to make it more appealing, I added a very large dose of white, with a piece I used in this post.

Piece of Cake | This Challenge of the Day (C.O.D.) shows you my least favorite (current) color! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

Seeing it in this format makes it … still not my favorite, but much better! It took me a little time to figure out the best color to pair it with, and Bermuda Bay was it. There’s not much of it, but the cake and candles have Bermuda Bay on them as well.

I was surprised to see Stampin’ Blends offered in the current Annual Catalog in several In Colors, including Pineapple Punch. I gave those areas a bit of shimmer with dabs of Wink of Stella.

C.O.D. #2

Welcome to the second installment of the Challenge Of the Day (C.O.D.)!

C.O.D. #2 = Create a project using a color you really don’t care for

Rules: The only rule is to use Stampin’ Up! products exclusively. Create your project, photograph it, then include it in a comment in the C.O.D. #2 post at the Heartfelt Inkspiration Facebook page. Your deadline is the end of the day. I’ll post my entry on Thursday.

So now, a confession: I don’t love every Stampin’ Up! color. As a demonstrator, I usually buy the In Colors for each new annual catalog. (There are five In Colors each year that stay for two catalog years.) I may hesitate, but I usually talk myself into buying at least the cardstock assortment so at least I can see what the colors are like IRL. Clue: Here’s what the 2018-2020 In Colors look like:

Can you guess which color I’ll be using for this C.O.D.? I can hardly wait to see how you work with a color you “hate”!
