Color confidence: the Color Coach cards

Stampin' Up! 2020-2021 Annual Catalog

I have finally looked at Every. Single. Page of the Stampin’ Up! 2020-2021 Annual Catalog. Isn’t the cover beautiful? And that tree trunk slab is quite gorgeous. But aside from the cover, is there anything else you notice?

Yes, I’ve color coordinated my sticky notes to the cover. Compulsive? Maybe, but I think it’s an indication of just how much Stampin’ Up! has influenced me over the past 15 years. I am aware of colors all the time, whether it’s hiking in the autumn prairie or watching a storm approach. So often I think about how I might interpret that using paper. Wow. Am I an artist?

When you open the cover of this new catalog, I think you’ll smile at the way the Stampin’ Up! colors are presented. This company knows color.

I’m not an expert. But if working with colors is a struggle for you, maybe I can help. This week I’d like to talk about — and show — how to make color decisions easier.

Color Coach card

To begin, let me share with you a resource from Stampin’ Up! The Color Coach is a seven-page pdf. Print it on good (Whisper White!) card stock. When you cut along the lines, you’ll end up with 2¾” x 3⅝” cards with three suggested color combinations for each of the 40 core colors in Stampin’ Up!’s four families. This is what one card looks like.

When I’m stuck using the same color combinations over and over, I reach for my stack of Color Coach cards (I clip them together with a giant binder clip) and find something a little offbeat — something that’s not really “me”!

Now just a little advice: Just because this card shows Melon Mambo, Mango Melody, and Pool Party doesn’t mean you have to — or should — use them in the same proportions. (In fact, you might find that rather jarring.) I learned the “gallon/quart/cup” rule of proportions. That’s a big dose of color #1, about a quarter as much of color #2, and a quarter as much of that of color #3.

Try using the Color Coach to prod you into using something different!

Free as a Bird: C.O.D. #10

I should have known better than to think my plans for today would go without a hitch, but I’m grateful our oldest grandson (fully disinfected!) stopped by. We don’t see him often enough!

Luckily, my card was finished before he arrived, just not this post. Here’s my card for the Challenge of the Day, based on Freshly Made Sketches #434:

Free as a Bird | This Freshly Made Sketches challenge was a snap to put together with leftover bits I found while I was tidying up the studio! #434 at Freshly Made Sketches Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

I turned the sketch on its side to fit this Free as a Bird piece, which I unearthed while I was tidying up the studio. (That job is not finished yet!) It’s on Very Vanilla, so I needed to tone down the long-retired Gingham Gala DSP, which has a white background. A little bit of inking with a Sponge Brayer did the trick, yielding sort of a vintage, grandmotherly look. It fits me!

C.O.D. #10: Sketch challenge

This Challenge of the Day uses Freshly Made Sketches 434 -- it's a winner! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

What in the world happened? Five weeks without a “daily” challenge? Shame on me!

Well, that changes today! The C.O.D. is back, and the Challenge of the Day today is a sketch challenge. I saw #434 at Freshly Made Sketches and was immediately inspired.

I’ll be posting my answer to the C.O.D. later, after I finish a project I started this weekend. I hope I can keep the third-grader occupied enough — or at least enlist his help!

I will not promise a Challenge of the Day every day, or even more than once a week. But I’ll try, so that I don’t have to call it a C.O.W.!

Share Sunshine: You are essential to me

I totally neglected to update you on the amount of money raised through the Stampin’ Up! Share Sunshine pdf download. As of May 12, we have raised over $161,000 USD to support organizations that are helping COVID-19 frontline responders and communities vulnerable to the pandemic. Isn’t that amazing?

The Share Sunshine pdf download is a digital stamp set (15 pages!) packed with both lighthearted and heartfelt sentiments and imagery relevant to the unique COVID-19 and social distancing situation we’re currently in. Use a punch, paper trimmer, or die to add just the right message to your card. I chose this one for a quick card for my friend and to show you some new product:

Share Sunshine | 100% of the of the proceeds from this pdf download go to support COVID-19 efforts! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

I used the swirly wreath die cut because it was sitting on my stamping table — can’t get faster than that, right? But check out the beautiful embossing on this note card. The Greenery embossing folders, from the upcoming 2020-2021 Annual Catalog, are narrow. You can see the edges on this 3.5″-wide card front! Perfect for banners and strips of card stock. Check out the detail:

There’s still time to help make a difference by purchasing the Share Sunshine pdf download! For every purchased download ($12 USD), Stampin’ Up! will donate 100% of the proceeds to COVID-19 efforts. Help us make a difference to vulnerable communities and frontline workers!

Heartfelt Inkspiration 2020-2021 Annual Catalog reveal

“Reveal” videos for new Stampin’ Up! products are everywhere now, because demonstrators are in the middle of the pre-order period. Yes, one of the perks of being a demo is being able to get our hands on product early.

When a seasonal “mini” catalog is coming up, we get to pre-order anything from the catalog. Can you imagine the fun — and the potential expense?

Such is not the case for the annual catalog; we are limited to certain products. That’s why you’ll see similar items in product reveals and lots of samples posted using just those products. I love to see the new In Colors in person!

And yet, I don’t think I’ve ever received a Stampin’ Up! order just for myself without experiencing a twinge of disappointment when I saw I had not ordered this item or that. It’s usually because I second-guess my selections (especially when I see the order total) and try to stave off buyer’s remorse. So it was with this order. Still, plenty to play with, and plenty of time ahead for more good things!

Ideas for storing your die sets

I’ve had a busy few days, and some emotional ones, too. Situations that may have been handled easily and without drama prior to the COVID-19 pandemic now seem to take me too long and require too much emotional energy.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to additional therapy gardening time today and — finally! — unboxing my Stampin’ Up! products from the upcoming 2020-2021 Annual Catalog. Hard to believe we’re only about three weeks from its debut!

As soon as I get new die sets out of the box, I go through the same series of tasks, despite how much I want to just start using them! See how I get them ready:

Throwback Thursday: Window Box Thinlets

Shortly after our governor issued his first stay-at-home order in March, I started tackling the storage area of the basement. (How many of you have been busy learning new skills or tackling home improvement projects?) Part of that effort involved going through an embarrassing number of completed cards from camps, etc., that had never been mailed.

I’m ashamed of that (even though I know I’m not alone). Cards are meant to be sent, not hoarded!

On the positive side, I did have a lovely trip down memory lane as I unearthed some of my favorite cards. This was one of them, from three years ago:

This card was CASEd from the 2017 spring seasonal catalog. The die was from the Window Box Thinlits set. I don’t remember how the color was created in the catalog, but we used Sponge Daubers to apply Old Olive, Rich Razzleberry, and Calypso Coral ink that peeked through the raised die cut. I loved this look, which could also be more easily achieved with a piece of Designer Series Paper. The sentiment banner was Sweet Sugarplum card stock.

If my copy of the Stampin’ Up! 2020-2021 Annual Catalog ever arrives in our mailbox, I’ll see if there’s another die that could be used in a similar way!

I’m happy to say that my hidden stash of cards has been respectfully given away and received with great joy.

How to convert a clear mount stamp to a cling stamp

Welcome to another Video Vednesday! A stamper talked to me this past week about using the Stampin’ Up! clear blocks and how our various stamp materials are mounted to the blocks. I thought this basic information might be needed by others, so here you go! (Do you have a topic you’d like me to talk about? Let me know!)

To repeat: Shiny side (sticky) goes down against the label, dull side (clingy) goes up against the block.

Oh, and the name of the product is Take Your Pick (#144107, $10.00 US)!

Share Sunshine: Just Breathe

Life got away from me a bit in the last couple of days, but here is the card I promised, using the Share Sunshine pdf download.

Share Sunshine | Using the sentiments in this pdf download is fun and fast! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

The sentiments in this digital stamp set are so fun, and putting together a card is fast … or it can be. I chose to pull out a stamp set that was languishing on my near-empty shelves and had a great time experimenting with various color combinations. A bit of gingham from the retiring Neutrals 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper pack, die cut with a scallop, pleased me.
