Let’s celebrate you with stars!

We are so happy to celebrate a major accomplishment in the family, even if the celebration will be virtual! Our granddaughter, Bayley, will earn her MBA from Aurora University in August, and I’ve got just the card for her!

I confess I originally intended this for a guy’s birthday card, but the day I finished it Bayley’s graduation announcement arrived, and this seemed appropriate for her — a star in every way!

Oh, and appropriate for today, as well!

As so often happens, I was experimenting with something and the design evolved. For this dotted background, I used another one of the Basic Pattern Decorative Masks, but this time I used a sponge to vary the intensity of the color.

Decorative mask + Sponge Brayer = ombre background

“Welllll … that’s an interesting background ….” Yes, honey, I agree! I then explained to my husband that this card was the end result of my Using Sponge Brayers and a Decorative Mask video.

Before I put this card together I wasn’t sure about the background, either! It reminded me of a couch someone had in the 1970s. No one needs to be reminded of that! But when assembled, it made sense. You know, context.

I’ll give you the ingredients for this card now, but keep reading to see my second experiment!

As I was putting away the supplies from the video, I was surprised to find another mask in the package with the Basic Pattern Decorative Masks. There are four masks (which I would have known had I used them before), so I took the opportunity to use the one I left in the package to make a card for my stepson to congratulate him on his new job. It’s essentially the same card as the one above:

I love the way this one turned out! I went conservative with the colors, which is perfect for my husband’s son.

Fancy Phrases in pink

Yes, this card is pink, all right — I’m just not sure which pink it is! Realizing I should have mailed this at least a day earlier, I put it in the mail before noting all the details.

Fancy Phrases | This is a sweet set with great sentiments. Love to color? Me, too! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

I bought Fancy Phrases because it’s a great little set for coloring, but the sentiments are excellent, too (even though you don’t see one here!). You may be surprised at the number of Stampin’ Blends I used, but I wanted to make sure there was enough distinction between the two types of flowers, whatever they are! Oh, and I didn’t always use both the light and dark Blends markers, but you probably know that they are now only available in combo packs of both, rather than individual markers, so that’s how I listed them in the recipe below.

I wanted to give just a bling to the center of the smaller flowers, so on top of the Mango Melody I added tiny drops of Shimmery Crystal Effects. In case you’re wondering, I have an unbroken record of smearing it, no matter where I put my project!

Using Sponge Brayers and a Decorative Mask

A mask is what we used to call a stencil. Instead of using a special brush and pouncing paint through the mask, in this video I’ll show you how to use Stampin’ Up! Sponge Brayers and ink to create an ombre background. Thanks, Betty, for suggesting this video topic!

Wreath Builder

I love to use a wreath on cards — typically at least one of my Jingle Jump designs uses a wreath. I like the wreath die from last year’s Holiday Catalog, but I love the Wreath Builder set of dies from the new Stampin’ Up! 2020-2021 Annual Catalog!

Here I layered a wreath cut from Old Olive and one cut from Pear Pizzazz, tucking the leaves here and there so it seems more natural. This die, as well as the flower dies I used, both cut and emboss. Bonus!

Wreath Builder | This is by far the most versatile wreath set of dies I've ever used from Stampin' Up! The dies both cut and emboss.

Mailing “flat” is important to me, so I needed flower centers that were not too bulky. My favorite Metallic Pearls worked for the Flirty Flamingo flowers, but for the larger flowers I punched circles from Basic Gray card stock and added some Shimmery Crystal Effects (hidden on page 147) to simulate enamel dots.

Happy birthday, Lynn!

Blossoms in Bloom: Happy Birthday

Several weeks ago I shared with you my top 5 had-to-have new products. This set was on the list, and it is everything I hoped it would be! I could hardly wait to design this card for the Host Appreciation Virtual Open House this month.

Blossoms in Bloom | Best Year | These Distinktive stamps have a special texture that gives added depth and dimension in a single step. Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

This is a Distinktive set; the floral stamps have a special texture that gives added depth and dimension in a single step.  What a benefit!

I chose to stamp the big floral image in Granite Gray — not a typical color for a flower! But because it was the first time I was using these photopolymer stamps, I just couldn’t bear the thought of staining them! I love the way this color palette worked out.

I stamped part of the image inside the card and a larger part of it on the envelope flap. No masking needed, I just watched what I was doing.

The thing that raises this card to another level, however (and suitable for my younger sister’s birthday!), is that I embossed the floral panel with the Tasteful Textile 3D embossing folder. If the stamped image doesn’t already look like watercoloring (it does), this texture increases the effect.

Celebrate Sunflowers in brass

Oooh! As if the big sunflower image in this set wasn’t wonderful enough, combining it with this detailed die cut from Brass Foil is amazing! This card is from the recent Host Appreciation Virtual Open House.

Although I used Stampin’ Blends on the sunflower image, you could also stamp the image on Bumblebee or Crushed Curry card stock. Equally fab! The center of the flower was stamped on Soft Suede in the same ink; it was cut out and flat adhered behind the foil flower. I love all the piercings around the center!

The coloring I did was fast and without any plan; the brass overlay compensates for any imperfections. Perhaps you can see the Tasteful Textile embossing on the banner — is it in your stamping area yet?

A sneak peek of the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machines

Stampin' Cut & Emboss

I have been negligent in letting you know that the two new cutting and embossing machines and their accessories (shown on pages 170-172 of the 2020-2021 Annual Catalog) are not yet available. Even though there’s a lot of anticipation and excitement over these products, the larger machine will not be ready to order until September 1, and we won’t get to see the Mini Stampin’ Cut & Emboss until toward the end of the year. Boo hoo!

You can read all kinds of information in this Stampin’ Cut & Emboss pdf. To see the machine “in real life,” check out this Stampin’ Up! corporate video — but don’t get too comfortable, it’s not even two minutes long!

Celebrate Sunflowers: Flowers for Every Season

I warned you about the sunflower motif taking over my stamping life! On this card, I chose to use the Flowers for Every Season Designer Series Paper as the floral piece.

Celebrate Sunflowers | Flowers for Every Season | Flowers on flowers here, embossing the beautiful Misty Moonlight In Color card stock with the Ornate Floral 3D folder. Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

I think it’s a little hard to see from the thumbnail of this Designer Series Paper below (it’s clearer in the 2020-2021 Annual Catalog), but in addition to smaller-format florals, the 6″ x 6″ paper has less-busy patterns that are perfect when you want a plainer panel. I’ll show you an example of that some other time.

See how beautifully the Misty Moonlight card stock coordinates with the dotted background of this DSP? Along with Poppy Parade, the colors of Flowers for Every Season are from the 2020-2022 In Colors. At this moment, some of the In Color products are not available, so I have yet to enjoy the ribbon. Soon, I hope!
