Water + color

Yesterday was a beautiful day, perfect for catching up on items from my parade of daily adventures. I’m so grateful to be busy, happy with what I do, and planning ahead for life during shutdown, again. Right after lunch, I put beef stew in the oven for supper (adapted from this recipe) so I could keep working.

When Peter finished his after-school snack, he was anxious to go downstairs and resume his watercoloring of a harbor of ships. Back in the spring, when his school was closed to in-person learning and he was here several days each week, I bought a Watercolor for Kids class offered by Emily Lex.

This has nothing to do with stamping, or maybe it does. I’ve always felt that my art skills are inadequate; when you start with a stamped image, it seems to me that most of the work is done for you! The coloring is easy for me, but I’ve always been nervous about creating “from scratch.” So I thought this would be a good thing for both of us.

Alas, my approach is to invest in the supplies (with extras, because you never know!) and jump in with both feet. Peter’s approach is, well, not quite as intense. We have quite a ways to go but, without any prompting or pressing from me, he told me he wants to resume the lessons when he is here all day next week.

While he was working on his painting (and starting another), I thought I’d review a bit, just to recall the techniques we learned months ago. Although Peter kept urging me to try an abstract painting (not how I roll), I started simply:

I’m anxious to continue, if only to learn this skill — and prove something to myself. I’m not interested in a new hobby; there are more than enough challenges and inspiration with Stampin’ Up! to do that! But how harmful can a little more happiness be?

‘Tis the season for JOY

I’m pretty sure I’ve used more red and green for Christmas card designs this year than in my entire 15-year Stampin’ Up! career! This is another card from October’s Holiday Stamp-a-Stack to Go, designed by Jennifer Taylor. Although there are beautiful Shaded Spruce designs in the ‘Tis the Season DSP, we simplified the colors to Cherry Cobbler (or Real Red) and Garden Green, since participants would be doing their own stamping at home.

Of course, there’s no stamping on this card, just those cool layering dies from the Peace & Joy bundle.

Pretty sure I was not the only kid who outlined my name over and over until the entire page was outlining. (Did you do this?) That’s what these dies remind me of — I’ll show you a card next week that shows the full extent of the outlining these dies can provide. You can do as much or little as you wish. Well done, Stampin’ Up!

I used Adhesive Sheets for the thinnest die cut, because it is so much easier than applying tiny dots of glue. The Foam Adhesive Sheets would be wonderful, too!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I just finished the November edition of the Holiday Stamp-a-Stack to Go, so it’s time to get you caught up with the October offerings. (You can see two of the October cards here and here.)

Wrapped In Christmas | Red and white for Christmas? Of course? And how better to use those colors than with these candy canes from 'Tis the Season? Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

Count me among those who love candy canes! More generally, I love anything mint, and we always have a large stash of starlight mints (and wintergreen Life Savers) in the house and car. I use small holiday canes for Candy Cane Popcorn, pulverizing them in my bullet blender. I buy them on clearance after the holidays; unless a young boy finds them, I’m ready early to make up take-out cartons or bags to give away to friends and family.

This card was designed by my Holiday SAS partner, Jennifer Taylor. Can’t go wrong with a triplet — not her, the card layout!

I am so grateful for the response to these two Holiday SAS offerings. Because of COVID restrictions, I plan to offer more at-home kits beginning in January, featuring Stampin’ Up! products from the upcoming January-June 2021 Mini Catalog. (Do I have you on my list to receive that Mini from me? If you have placed an order with me in the past 12 months, I’ll see that you get one!)

Christmas Blessings

Whew! There was a lot of work going on in the studio the last couple of weeks, getting ready for the November Holiday Stamp-a-Stack to Go. Everything is packaged and ready to pick up or mail — thank you so, so much for your support of this at-home event!

Both the November and October Holiday SAS events focused on Wrapped in Christmas, the excellent sentiment stamp in the Stampin’ Up! August-December 2020 Mini Catalog. Participants either used that set or stamps of their own that fit the cardstock pieces I provided in their kit.

This was the first card I designed for the October session. It’s so “me” — the graphic texture against the laciness of the mat is just the way I roll! And this sentiment (my favorite of the set) is perfect here.

I hope you can see the subtle — but important — green edge on the sentiment panel. Stamping directly on that frilly mat would have been pretty risky, so I cut the top piece for the kit. But there needed some definition between the two pieces, so I reminded stampers how to “walk the edge”; you can see how to do that in the Heartfelt Inkspiration video 5 tips in 10 minutes.

Away from home … sort of

My bag is packed …

… and I’m ready to go to OnStage@Home. That’s right, a Stampin’ Up! event in my own studio in my own home! I’ll be listening to speakers and watching product demonstrations and participating in breakout classes and stamping with new products.

Kind of excited for the days ahead, but I’ll miss the hugging and laughing and late-night chats. And BTW, that’s the event bag I received. Someone in 4th grade already claimed one of the items, but there’s still fun stuff for me, and this bag will be perfect for our picnics next summer.

Thank you, stampers, for your support of my Stampin’ Up! business — especially during the past several months. I appreciate it and value our friendship!

‘Tis the Season: Christmas Tree

When designing for the October Holiday Stamp-a-Stack to Go, we didn’t start by deciding to use ‘Tis the Season DSP on every card, but that’s what happened. (Once again I collaborated on this event with my Texas stampin’ partner, Jennifer Taylor.)

Unlike my traditional Jingle Jumps, the “to go” version meant that we couldn’t provide any stamped images (Stampin’ Up! rules). And because we couldn’t know if stampers would have the same or similar dies and punches, all that work had to be done for them. I’m grateful for the help of Elizabeth Hamilton, who truly earns the name, “Big Shot!”

So some designs — like this one — required more prep than others. So worth it!

As I said about yesterday’s card, I love the Greenery folder on a Christmas tree.

Did you know this garland is one of the dies in Stitched Triangles? Here I snipped it into two pieces for a graceful drape. I’m looking forward to some future birthday cards that will use it to proclaim, “celebrate!”

Christmas Cheer

I’m sorry there’s no video today, but I am deep in prep for the November Holiday Stamp-a-Stack to Go. And, I’m getting ready to go away from home, sort of. You’ll have to come back to learn more about that.

Meanwhile, here’s another Christmas offering, once again using ‘Tis the Season paper. If it was backordered when you wanted it, there was good reason. I myself have used (mostly) six packages.

Itty Bitty Christmas | Stitched Triangles | Little Treat Box | Creating a tag from the Little Treat Box dies is one of my favorite things; the stitched (and scalloped) edge is perfect for stitching elsewhere on the tag. I kind of fell in love with creating this texture on the triangle, and you’ll see more of it in tomorrow’s post. The little leaves on this Greenery embossing folder play very nicely with the mistletoe, don’t you think?

If you’ve watched my recent videos, you may have seen tips on flagging the ends of a Classic Label (5 punch tips) and tying a free-hand bow (Working with ribbon). Both tips are in play on this card!
