Sparkle of the Season: Happy Birthday

As so often happens, a bundle not on my wish list becomes an obsession once it moves from list to order! Sparkle of the Season has 16 autumn and winter images. Although it has a swirly wreath stamp, I have been using the coordinating Seasonal Swirls dies to create my wreaths.

The first card I designed is for the upcoming Jingle Jump sessions in a few weeks. But meanwhile, I needed another birthday card, so I cleaned off a space on my work table and started playing. I tried for a sophisticated (rather than country) feel by using Sahara Sand as the background.

If you check the Seasonal Labels dies, you will not find one quite the size I used for the sentiment. Do you know how to cut a die smaller — or, here, shorter? If I ever created a post showing you this trick, it was deleted in the hacking episode of early 2019. It’s actually easy to do, and it increases the usefulness of your dies. I’ll try to put something together to show you how — before time gets away from me and the snow starts flying. (We are prepared for that, as our snowblower was tuned up a few weeks ago!)

This card was great fun to make, despite all those tiny leaves. The hardest part was choosing the colors!

Pretty Pumpkins: Happy Fall

I love designing cards for fall, but sometimes I find one so beautifully done by another stamper, I barely change anything. Such was the CASE with this one by Erica Cerwin:

Pretty Pumpkins | Banner Year | In north central Illinois, you don't hear too many people saying y'all, but I still love this saying! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

I loved several things about this card: the gorgeous clear-embossed background, the Cork specialty paper that you have to see and feel for yourself, and the old-is-new technique of heat embossing an image stamped in Classic ink.

So many stampers at camp in September had never done this technique. It’s simple, but so, so impressive:

  1. Ink up stamp in VersaMark ink to provide stickiness.
  2. Ink up stamp in Classic ink of your choice to provide color.
  3. Stamp image on cardstock.
  4. Sprinkle with clear embossing powder.
  5. Heat until image is shiny and raised.

You must clear the stamp thoroughly before repeating for another image, or you will muck up the VersaMark pad with color. If that happens, blot out the color (I press it several times against a piece of copy paper) and re-ink the pad. It won’t look new, but you shouldn’t have any color left on the pad. Or, just use that pad for images that will be embossed in something other than clear powder.

This technique basically allows you to emboss an image in any color!

Nuts About Squirrels: Hey There

When I say I have a love/hate relationship with squirrels, I know some of you nod your head. I arranged an adorable display of mums, pumpkins, and gourds by the front steps. But first, following a blogger’s directions, I soaked the pumpkins/gourds in a solution of water, bleach, and dish soap. I scrubbed them to remove any trace of field ick to head off potential mold and rot, and I was sure the bleach would deter critters from snacking on the veggies.

Some readers were incensed that the bleach would poison the darling rodents, but I think you know what happened: bites as big as a human’s destroyed my display. Now I have sprayed everything with Repels-All and will continue that regimen until Thanksgiving, if necessary. Good luck to me.

So you might be surprised to see that I bought Nuts About Squirrels from the Stampin’ Up! July-December 2021 Mini Catalog. Aw, nuts — they’re just so cute!

I loved the samples on page 49 of the Mini, but I thought they were too much for camp. Lucky me — when my friend Jennifer Taylor sent me a card using this set, I used her design! Instead of using the “filler” stamps for the acorn, we colored it with Stampin’ Blends.

Another tip: I found it easier to see what I was doing if I stamped the leaf veins first, then the leaf itself.

So, dear squirrels, continue to amuse us at breakfast with your antics on the fence, but please find your own meals in another yard!

Happy Plaidurday!

Have you heard about the worldwide celebration of plaid? Observed on the first Friday of October, today is the day we can “all make a positive impact in the world,” according to plaidurday.com. Read about the history of Plaidurday there, and find creative ideas on how you can celebrate — it’s not too late!

I had no idea I possessed that kind of power in a piece of Designer Series Paper! So I dug into my stash of seasonal patterned paper for this retired autumnal plaid, perfect for the birthday of grandson #2 later this month, and got to work.

I was really surprised to learn that some of my stampers don’t like plaid. I can’t identify — I’d love to see a flannel-like plaid paper pack in next year’s July-December Mini Catalog. (Are you listening, Stampin’ Up!?)

This is my standard angled-cut layout using one of the Basic Borders die. You can see other versions here and here. I keep a template handy to mark the cardstock so I get consistent angles when I’m making multiples of this layout.

Delicate Dahlias: Much Gratitude

On this, the final day of Sale-A-Bration (August-September 2021 version), I just had to post another card using Delicate Dahlias. My first thought on seeing this stamp set was how I might create chrysanthemums, instead of dahlias.

I bought mums several weeks ago, beautiful plants full of unopened buds that I nurtured in hopes they would open in October. One of the plants has flowers similar to this color.

Delicate Dahlias | Heartfelt Wishes | I was surprised how Asian this card felt when I was done! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

I was almost dreaming about what this card could look like, and I finally went with the “outline” stamp in embossed gold powder. As you can see, it was tricky to work with (really challenging to align), but I was quite thrilled with the overall result.

I didn’t want to take anything away from the flowers, so I kept the sentiment simple. The overall effect is Asian, I think, and I feel that I might have once had a blouse or something in a similar pattern.

Anyway, I can put this design out of my head and get a good night’s sleep tonight!

Gorgeous Leaves: Happy Birthday

October, right from the start, has all kinds of birthdays for me to acknowledge, so there’s not a moment to waste! Most of the guys in our family have late-summer or autumn birthdays, so I design camp cards for them (you’ll see those coming up) and scour the sites of other stampers for good ideas.

This card, for grandson #3, is one of those good ideas! Inspired by Katie Drew, I chose to play it safe by stamping on an additional white panel. That was my safety net if something bad happened!

Gorgeous Leaves | Sweet As a Peach | Not quite a single-layer card, I used my "walking the edge" technique to provide some contrast. Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

In order to provide some contrast, I used my “walking the edge” technique. That tip plus four others (and a video) are in this blog post.

Here’s a better look at the edge of the top panel. I don’t think you could cut a mat this narrow!

Evergreen Elegance: Noel

One of my favorite holiday color combinations is green and gold. This combo says “elegance” to me — and never mind that Evergreen Elegance is the name of the stamp set with this beautiful evergreen!

This is another Jingle Jump card from August, and now you’ve seen all six designs. (Did you know? From the Categories drop-down menu at right, you can select Jingle Jump to see the archived posts talking about the Jingle Jump events and/or designs — at least for the past few years.)

Evergreen Elegance | Tidings & Trimmings | Green + gold = holiday elegance! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

If I would use this as my own Christmas card, making multiples, I would cut out the inside of the Gold Foil mat to use somewhere else. It seems like a waste of beautiful paper when most of it is hidden, but for a big event, it’s much easier to just cut them as is. I wouldn’t mat this evergreen circle any other way — in shape and shimmer, it’s a perfect complement to the sentiment tag.

FYI, one evergreen is stamped in Old Olive ink and the other is stamped off.

This pretty embossed panel uses one of the Wintry 3D folders, designed for the Mini Cut & Emboss Machine. This pack of two folders has been on backorder for some time, but is scheduled to be available this week. In the next few days, I’ll show you a card using the other one in the pack.

Heartfelt Wishes: Happiest Holidays

I love designing for my annual Jingle Jumps, and it’s especially fun when I can start with a sample from one of the Stampin’ Up! catalogs. (Don’t miss the final JJ weekend October 22-23!)

Heartfelt Wishes | It doesn't get any easier than CASEing a card by Stampin' Up! This is the perfect Jingle Jump card! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

You’ll find my inspiration on page 57 of the July-December 2021 Mini Catalog. What we didn’t do is all that scoring at the bottom. Instead, I chose complementary patterns from the excellent Peaceful Prints pack (FREE during Sale-A-Bration!).

Each patterned piece is the same size: 4″ x 2⅝”. For the sentiment strip:

  • Cut the strip 1″ x 5½”.
  • Stamp the sentiment in the center.
  • Apply adhesive or Stampin’ Dimensionals behind the stamped area only.
  • Align the strip’s top left edge to the bottom left edge of the top piece.
  • Align the strip’s bottom right edge to the top right edge of the bottom piece.
  • Trim the strip even with the edges of the card front (easiest done from the inside).

Those instructions might seem like something from a bad dream, but it’s really easy. Or, if you’ve got a good eye, just wing it!

I could make this card in lots of DSP variations for other occasions with this versatile stamp set!

Session 1:  Friday, October 22 — 1:00-5:00 p.m. (come any time)
Session 2:  Friday, October 22 — 6:30-9:30 p.m. (come any time) Sorry, closed!

Christmas to Remember: ‘Tis the Season

Do you remember creating Dymo embossed plastic labels? If you’re not in my age group, here’s the vintage label maker (Pinterest image) that spoke to my born-organized heart:

The current Stampin’ Up! set that recalls these labels is Christmas to Remember, from the July-December 2021 Mini Catalog (page 19). For the August Jingle Jump, we made this card:

Christmas to Remember | Paired with Peaceful Prints Designer Series Paper (August-September 2021 Sale-A-Bration), this simple tag is enough! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

At first glance, you might think the stamp was embossed in white on red cardstock, then cut out and adhered to the tag. But check out the stamp set, below, and you’ll see that you’re stamping in red! I love this effect, but you do have to make sure your ink pad isn’t overly juicy, or you’ll lose the detail of this thin font.

Christmas to Remember | Paired with Peaceful Prints Designer Series Paper (August-September 2021 Sale-A-Bration), this simple tag is enough! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

This is a seriously quick card, and another example of how using wonderful patterned paper can make a huge impact. Try this layout with other paper for another occasion — but whatever you do, don’t forget to get this FREE product before Sale-A-Bration expires on October 1!
