By My Side: Life is Better

It’s very fun for me to think back to the days when I would avoid any stamped image that needed to be colored! When someone asserts, “I hate to _____!” well, I can’t help but think it’s because they haven’t actually learned how to bicycle, or play dominoes, or cook, or lift weights, or — OK, color stamped images! At least, that’s been my experience.

By My Side | I colored this card with Stampin' Blends markers. What would you use? By My Side: Life is Better

I learned how to color from YouTube videos, printed tutorials, advice from friends, and lots of trial and error. It’s only paper, so try again.

I again apologize for the photo color issues; this is the Tahitian Tide version of the Tea Boutique Cards & Envelopes. It’s great to have these at hand as a jump start to creativity!

Ringed with Nature: Wreathed home

I can remember when I first started using stamp sets designed with two-step stamps. This means that there will be two (or maybe more) stamps used to create a single image, as in the card from this post.

In fact, Ringed with Nature has all sorts of two-step stamping. Strangely, though, that’s not how I created this card! My first idea was to create a house with a metal roof, which would require me to heat emboss the roof with clear powder, but not the building. Thus, I would have to stamp and cut them separately. Somewhere along the line, I changed my mind, but not until I had already cut out the pieces!

Not only did cutting out the house and roof require some fussy cutting, but the door and windows (stamped separately with second-generation Smoky Slate ink) and the chimney did as well. Oh, and fussy gluing. Still, I love the way this turned out.

What you may not be able to see here is an embossed circle of creamy Shimmery White card stock. The difference in shades of white is subtle but important to give additional detail.

I suppose I cheated on the Stamp Review Crew blog hop for this set, as I used a stamp from another set. Specifically, to add interest to the Pear Pizzazz wreath (from Natural Prints), I randomly stamped the fern image (from Nature’s Prints) in Old Olive ink. I’ll bet you couldn’t tell what stamp that was!

Ringed with Nature: Merry Christmas

I must admit I’m kind of smitten with this card. I started with an entirely different idea using an all-over, random pattern. I got that far, and this happened! BTW, if your stomach starts to churn at the thought of random stamping, check out this post that de-mystifies the technique! I recommend working with a piece of card stock at least 8½” x 4¼” and covering the whole thing. This tag is pretty little, so you’ll have lots left over for more projects!

Applying VersaMark to a panel through a Decorative Mask so you can heat emboss the pattern is so cool. At February’s Marvelous Masks class, we used a Sponge Dauber to apply the ink, but this time I thought I’d experiment with using a Blending Brush. Be sure to mark the brush that it is for VersaMark!

As always, when using VersaMark, the results can be surprising or even disappointing because it’s so hard to gauge the coverage. However, I was thrilled with the way this gold patterned panel turned out!

A bow tied with Simply Elegant Trim and some Festive Pearls carry forward the gold accents. These pearls are new in the July-December 2022 Mini Catalog, and they are amazingly bright and beautiful — I highly recommend!

Ringed with Nature: Happy Anniversary

I hope you enjoyed yesterday’s Stamp Review Crew blog hop featuring Ringed with Nature! As I wrote in my post, I will be highlighting each of my cards in separate blog posts so I can talk about them more.

As I share my first hop card, I offer two tips for this set:

  • Use a firm foam pad under your card stock when stamping in order to get a solid image. I use a piece of cheap vinyl placement.
  • My preference for two-step stamping is to stamp the darker image first. It makes it easy to see where the second image should be placed.

I love using the Stampin’ Up! Decorative Masks to create custom backgrounds. This one uses what I call the “double plaid” mask, enhanced with hand-drawn lines. Now when I say “hand-drawn,” I mean I added the lines to the plaid using a clear quilting ruler and a Stampin’ Blends marker.

This is the quilting ruler I have been using for over 18 years. It is always within reach as I stamp, helping keep elements on my projects straight and centered.

I colored this Crinkled Seam Binding Ribbon (a fave) by taping down the ends on my Grid Paper and applying Calypso Coral ink with a Blending Brush. For full instructions, click the Projects Sheets graphic below!

Stamp Review Crew: Ringed with Nature

Greetings on this second Stamp Review Crew hop of July! As a reminder, the Stamp Review Crew is an international group of Stampin’ Up! demonstrators who get together on the first and third Monday of each month to bring you all kinds of fabulous inspiration on a single stamp set. This hop features Ringed with Nature, a set (with coordinating hybrid embossing folder) from the July-December 2022 Mini Catalog.  You may have arrived here from Painted Orange, the blog of Charlet Mallett. Charlet is a member of the 2022 Stampin’ Up! Artisan Design Team. See why she earned that?

Sometimes I only show one or two cards for a hop, but this time I have three. Because of that, I will spotlight each card in an individual post this week, complete with a product list and, most likely, a free project sheet for each card. So come back!

Now, I googled this, and I can find no law, local ordinance, or other rule prohibiting the use of mushrooms on an anniversary card. It would be strange if the sentiment inside did not read, “So happy you grew on each other!” OK, my DH nixed that idea, but this card is still for the upcoming anniversary of his son and our DIL, parents of Peter. (Notice: family of three people, cluster of three mushrooms.)

I have had some instrumental-only Christmas music playing in my studio while I prepare for the upcoming Jingle Jump, so it was only natural to look at this set through a holiday lens. I had an idea to create an all-over pattern of poinsettias in various shades of red, and this is the result (there’s lots of gold you can’t really see here!):

My last card entailed a lot of fussy cutting, but it turned out just as I had hoped. Although I stamped Merry Christmas inside, this could certainly be a welcome-to-the-neighborhood-you-will-love-it-here-even-in-the-winter card. Accompanied by a tin of cookies, of course!

Again, please come back for all the details of these cards! Meanwhile, you’re moving on to Running with Scissors Stamper, the blog of Heidi Baks. I am in such good company today, aren’t I?

Potted Geraniums: Just for You

I’m so sorry to see that the Pool Party & Soft Sea Foam Cards & Envelopes, a free Sale-A-Bration item, are already unavailable! But I still want to show you this card — of course, you know you can just substitute regular Soft Sea Foam card stock.

Potted Geraniums | Even on plain Soft Sea Foam card stock (instead of this retired Sale-A-Bration item), this would be a charming card! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

Yes, I did ask myself the required “How many floral sets do I need?” question before I added this set to my first order from the Stampin’ Up! 2022-23 Annual Catalog. It’s just that I love geraniums!

This is a two-step stamp set, and I chose to simply stamp off to get the “filler” color. I used Calypso Coral because that is part of my theme in my backyard shade garden: coral, pink in various shades, and burgundy/berry, contrasted with dark green, creamy yellow and lime green foliage. It’s so pretty and gives me a great deal of pleasure, especially while eating breakfast on the back porch. (Or weeding and watering, for that matter!)

I tucked the stem behind the pot and allowed the leaves to cascade over the front. Where to place the flowers on the leaves is a personal choice, I’d say, and I’ve seen them in various positions. It’s all good!

Full of Love: Hello There

Yesterday I talked about one of my favorite Sale-A-Bration products, and today I show you another one.

The Pool Party & Soft Sea Foam Cards & Envelopes (#159940) are a great choice for a free item with $50 in product during Sale-A-Bration (through the end of August, while supplies last). Included are 20 heavy-weight, pre-printed cards (10 have a Pool Party pattern and 10 have the same pattern in Soft Sea Foam) and 20 printed envelopes (all the same, in Soft Sea Foam). Whether you leave the card base as printed (as I did on my card below) or add other images (check the samples in the SAB brochure), these are very versatile.

As with the other image in Full of Love, this is a great image to color!

I added a little bit of shading, just because I have fun with that, but didn’t blend much.

I used Metallic Pearls on the sentiment strip (and forgot to put one in the center of the Fresh Fresia flower before I took the pictures), but they are retired, so substitute with something from your stash.

Ringed with Nature

Bundles are expensive, so I think long and hard whether I will get a lot of use from one before I invest in it. The Ringed with Nature bundle is loaded with possibilities (good thing for me, as I’ll be participating July 18 in the Stamp Review Crew blog hop featuring it):

159889 Ringed with Nature

Just look at all those seasonal images — and that Tree Rings Hybrid Embossing Folder is so cool! But one of my favorite aspects of this bundle is the FREE Rings of Love Designer Series Paper you can earn with a qualifying purchase during Sale-A-Bration (through the end of August, while supplies last).

I love the pattern with the birds, and if I could wallpaper our powder room with it, I would!

By My Side: Dutch Door

In the last century, my younger sister had an enviable collection of Liddle Kiddle dolls, and that’s what the characters in this set remind me of. (Doing just the tiniest bit of research on these mini dolls made me laugh all over again!)

Since they are so playful and unrealistic, these By My Side kids are fun (not stressful) to color. I usually outline the line image I color, as it creates the illusion that the image is cut out and “popped up.”

By My Side | The characters in this set are wonderful to color! Please click to read more! | Stampin' Up! | HeartfeltInkspiration.com | Debra Burgin

You’ll notice from the title of this post that this is a “Dutch Door” card. There’s nothing really fancy about it, as you’re basically just slicing off the upper half of the card front. Of course, you must remember not to adhere the entire circle, only the bottom. (But you knew that, right?) I embossed just the upper half of the white card liner so I could write my message inside. I don’t think I have a folder to replace the retired Ornate Floral 3D.

As usual, the colors are not true here; the card base and DSP on the front are both Tahitian Tide (aka turquoise). And this cutie is much more of a carrot top than it seems here. I’ve had this card ready to go forever, and now it is in the mail, ta-da!
