Fresh as a Daisy

I’ve told stampers at camp this week that the Cheerful Daisies bundle was not on my first (or even second) wish list for the 2023-2024 Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalog. I’ll admit I’ve gotten more cautious about those go-ahead-just-add-it-it’s-only-money impulse buys. But I realized I don’t have daisies anymore on my shelf — or really any floral sets that provide opportunities to use different techniques — so I added the bundle.

I’m not ashamed to admit I love stamping with flowers, and I have another new set on my list for next month’s camps. Can you guess which one?

I’ll be part of the Stamp Review Crew blog hop next Monday, May 15, featuring the Cheerful Daisies set. Till then, enjoy this Stampin’ Up! corporate video that shows off the Fresh as a Daisy Suite; you can see it in the catalog on pages 110-111.

Sweet Citrus: A Big Squeeze

This is the last card from April’s All-Occasions Stamp-a-Stack. This set wasn’t originally on my January-April 2023 Mini Catalog wish list, but when I saw it would be in the new annual catalog, I put it on an order.

Am I the only one who loves Ruby Red grapefruit from Texas? It is a bit of sunshine in a cold and gloomy winter. Ponder which of these is the stranger habit: one of us uses sweetener on a grapefruit half in the morning and the other uses salt.

This is a card that is not really “simple stamping,” but it’s worth the effort! These are photopolymer stamps, which makes the two-step stamping easy, but if you have a Stamparatus, the stamping is very easy!

Although this hybrid embossing folder allows you to cut and emboss at the same time, I think the embossed panel itself is really stunning.

Welcome!

Woohoo!  Allow me to introduce you to the latest Stampin’ Up! publication:  the 2023-2024 Annual Catalog.  Click the image at right to see the 180-page pdf!  I’ve been able to see this catalog for a month, and my wish list continues to grow the more carefully I look at each page.  After my initial suspicion over the updated color palette, it’s a delight to see everything looking so fresh!

I have two resources that will enhance your new catalog experience:

  • New Color Coach cards which include the 2023 Color Refresh
Need a refresh of your own?  Break out of the color combo rut by using the Stampin’ Up! Color Coach cards.  This 10-page pdf will allow you to have one 2¾” x 3⅝” card for each of the In Colors introduced this year and last year and all the new colors that have joined the party.  Just cut on the lines!  You can punch the corner of each card and keep them on a ring, but I simply fasten them with a large binder clip.
  • 2023-2024 Annual Catalog Sample recipes (166 pages)
My favorite creative inspiration comes right from the catalog, but sometimes I can’t quite figure out the “ingredients” — until I look up the sample in this document!

Both of these catalog aids — and lots more — are available on the Resources page of the Heartfelt Inkspiration blog.

On the Farm: A Good Day

With its cheerful pastoral scene, this card is perfect for a kiddo or a lover of all things country! This sheep having a snack on a hill of green grass makes me smile.

There is a sentiment stamped inside this card. I tell stampers to do that first: If the stamping is crooked, you can turn the card “inside out” and stamp again. The inside then becomes the front, which will cover the mistake.

Despite the detail, this Stamp-a-Stack card isn’t particularly complicated — it just looks that way, thanks to the three pieces of retired Sale-A-Bration patterned paper. Of course, you could get very complicated, as there are 17 red rubber cling stamps and 27 dies to work with!

We punched out that sentiment with a long-retired 1″ circle punch, another one of those essentials in my craft area!

The On the Farm stamp set, dies, and bundle will all be retired after Monday, May 1; if you’re interested, do not buy the bundle. Buying the stamp set and dies separately is actually less expensive!

Color & Contour: For You

This easy card is a lighthearted way to say hello, happy birthday, or hope you feel better! When I say “stamp more than one,” this is exactly the kind of card I’m talking about.

For texture, the Pale Payapa panel is embossed. To “connect” the Bermuda Bay words to the flower, I applied dots of color to the center with a Stampin’ Blends marker.

This sweet flower is a favorite of mine — so easy to stamp and die cut. My tips? Decide which direction is “up” by identifying a unique petal on the stamp; mark the block with an arrow or use the block letter on the side. Do the same with the other stamp. Mark your cardstock scrap so you know which direction is up (if you’ve been to camp, you know I snip the corner and always stamp with it in the top right). Stamp the dark outline first, then the lighter “filler” image. Do a bunch of these; the die will be easy to position the same way each time.

Forever Fern: With Deepest Sympathy

I remember seeing Forever Fern for the first time, absolutely enthralled by these images and the colors the artists used. It was a revelation to see how these colors could play together! For this Stamp-a-Stack card, I chose a similar mix of greens — some with yellow tones and some more blue.

I’m not sure about putting this set and its coordinating dies, Forever Flourishing, on my retirement pile. I love this style; the other set that is in my “keep” pile is Christmas Season, which has a similar feel. But we’ll see. You can’t keep everything, I keep repeating to myself.

This card is really easy. I made it three times before I had the measurements worked out, and each time the stamped panel was different. Underneath the sentiment, it’s pretty messy, but it all makes sense when put together. Substitute another embossed background, of course!

Eden’s Garden: Let’s Celebrate You

As you may have noticed, I use this big image pretty often for all-over, random stamping. And this particular stamp from Celebrate Sunflowers is another favorite. But is it time to move on? Are there substitutes in the new catalog that will give me a similar feel?

I brought out the Pretty Peacock ink and cardstock I had saved from when it was an In Color for the All-Occasions Stamp-a-Stack. It was sort of a look back and look forward to next week, when it becomes part of the standard color lineup. Some of us talked about how the other new or returning colors fit into the color families. It’s kind of amazing, really, to see the big picture; so I can stop fretting over my favorites that are retiring.

Speaking of color families, I have organized my colors more or less in rainbow order for the past few years. It’s beautiful and inspiring! But each year I forget that it’s a big job to re-do this, especially if I decide to keep some favorite retiring colors. Do I sell ink pads and refills, but keep the Stampin’ Blends? Do I need more hanging files, more folders, more labels, more storage? So although I had this on my to-do list yesterday, it will likely take me all week to re-organize my area.

This, like most of the SAS cards, is a simple layout: a stamped square of white, adhered to a full panel of color, topped by a sentiment strip of that same color.

Party Puffins: Birthday cake

Color me happy that Fresh Freesia is a permanent color in the Stampin’ Up! palette! There’s something very pleasing to me about this color, and I have used it in paper and ink quite a bit in the past two years (including the samples in my Marvelous Masks class in February 2022). So before the retirement lists were released, I knew I had to use it for last weekend’s All-Occasions Stamp-a-Stack.

My leftovers from the Sale-A-Bration Dandy Designs paper pack did not stretch quite far enough, so I had to substitute another pattern, one equally fun!

Just learning to use Stampin’ Blends? Start with a small image, like this one, with no blending required.

Note that some of the Blends we used are retired, as well as some other products (but not the Charming Sentiments stamp set, which we used inside). On the agenda for today is a sorting through of my stamps, inks, paper, and tools to decide what to keep and what to sell at the Annual Heartfelt Inkspiration Garage Sale in June. Can you keep everything???

Too pretty to throw away?

Nearly the last thing I do when preparing for an event here is to clean off my own area. I was talking to a stamper about the Stamparatus Small Grid Paper (she got it just in the nick of time), and she asked how often she should replace it. I laughed and told her I use my regular Grid Paper for a long time! Here’s what mine looked like — actually pretty clean! — before I replaced it with a clean piece.

Grid Paper

In addition to cleaning a stamp before really cleaning it, I write notes and measurements and (gulp!) phone numbers. Too bad I don’t have a name with that number, and I can only hope it was a “just in case” notation!

Grid Paper (#130148) may seem like an extravagance (if you just want to protect your work surface, you could always use a piece of copy paper, after all), but you may not realize that

  • This is a big piece of “scratch paper,” measuring 11″ x 17″. There are 100 sheets in the pad, so it will likely be a long time before you need to replace it. I stamp for weeks using the same piece, only replacing it if (a) I am cleaning up for a gathering or (b) I have had a Glue Incident.
  • There are rules with imperial measures (i.e., inches) on four edges on one side and metric on the reverse. This means I don’t have to reach for a ruler, I can simply place my material against the rule on the Grid Paper. Or, I can stamp an image and easily determine how big a piece of paper I should cut for stampers to use.
  • The “grid” is 1/4″ squares. Use these squares to keep items straight and even.
  • There are heavier lines that divide the gridded area into quadrants. These allow you to find the center point of your work. The top is a centering ruler, so the vertical line (the middle of the ruler) is at “0” and inches increase to the right and left.

I think I’ve provided Grid Paper ever since I started holding classes. Sometimes stampers take home the paper at their place, which is great. Those left behind go into my personal supply!
