Snow Crystal: All About You

Using an image in an unexpected way is one of my favorite challenges. And Snow Crystal was a challenge — I mean, it’s a snowflake, period, right? But for this card for our neighbor’s birthday, I broke the image down into some of its elements: the center and left/right “arms.”

I made this card for the Stamp Review Crew blog hop earlier this week. (Click to see what the other bloggers created — and leave a comment, please!) I was concerned that die-cutting the elements and spacing them evenly would be an engineering and math nightmare, but I was satisfied with my first effort. I already had the little black mats cut out for another project using this Perennial Postage die, so that was an easy start.

As with yesterday’s Snow Crystal card, I embossed the image, but this time with silver powder. Although the embossing is bright, the effect of isolating the snowflake elements gives this card the sense of antique, ornate sterling silver flatware. This is appropriate for our neighbors, and for us, too. I have some mixed-pattern pieces from someone in the family; I would collect more if I was 30 years younger and we hadn’t just gone through a few major cleanouts. Using them every day means they are easier to clean (I haven’t had a dishwasher for the past 37+ years, so we are used to doing dishes by hand!).
