Fond of Autumn: Birthday Wishes

When I bought the Fond of Autumn bundle, I knew I would love using the stamp set (hello coloring!), but I didn’t really grasp the versatility of the Autumn Bouquet dies:

When you look at this photo, don’t forget that you are looking at the dies upside down — it’s easiest to understand how they work to see it this way first.

This is the card I made with the Fond of Autumn bundle. (You can see I used the single flower image inside the card, but you can’t see that I also stamped the Birthday Wishes image from Amazing Year in Night of Navy ink.)

I think it’s pretty clear that I used the two big dies at the top of the picture to get this doily-like, Crumb Cake piece. The die on the left is the outline, and the one on the right is the detail. You can cut this “doily” using both dies simultaneously.

Using only the detail die will give you a pierced effect, as seen on the sample (where it was used twice) on page 52 of the Mini Catalog. That’s a very cool effect, isn’t it?

Now, suppose you want to use that wonderful, big stamped image. That outline die will also cut around it, as you’d expect … but the die directly below it (same size) in the picture cuts around the image and splits up the image into four parts! And I thought you’d have to cut them out by hand! Let’s look closer:

Here are the four parts:

  1. The leaves and berries (I am calling them blueberries) at the top.
  2. The leaves and berries at the bottom.
  3. The uncolored oak leaves (and hidden acorns).
  4. The three flowers, leaves, and small cluster of berries adhered over the oak leaves.

If I wanted to go totally autumn, I could just color and die cut the oak leaves and acorn section. It’s genius!
