Because I can, that’s why!

Debra Burgin 1208 Canning JarIn the old days, I used to make a lot of jam.  When fruit was excellent and reasonably priced, I’d prepare it and freeze it in the quantities needed for a batch of a jam.  I loved combining fruits:  triple berry, blueberry rhubarb, and peach raspberry.  On canning day, I’d have big bowls with prepped fruit, dozens of jelly jars, pounds and pounds of sugar, and a giant pot of simmering water.  It was a hot, sticky job, but at the end of the day the satisfaction of seeing a lineup of jewel-colored jars was very high.  I saved the jam to sell at our church’s summer fair and to give away as gifts.

So I have a special place in my heart for canning jars, and still use them around the house.  Vintage blue jars have become candle holders (pour a base of salt or sand into the jar and nestle a votive inside), vases, and containers holding all manner of small items, especially in the kitchen.

This set, from the Holiday Catalog, is plain adorable.  The matching Framelits are useful for trimming the images.  I love that Stampin’ Up! offers these two products as the Perfectly Preserved Bundle at a 15% discount.

I hope it doesn’t bother you that the fruit is mostly whole in this set.  Of course you don’t can whole apples or cherries with the stems on.  I don’t think a stamp of applesauce would be very appealing!  So we’ll accept this as art, not reality, right?

We returned from a funeral Saturday afternoon to find a bag of peaches on our back steps from our neighbors.  Their tree was so heavy with fruit that the branches were breaking.  Yesterday the kids had a stand in the front yard selling peaches and apples, with complimentary water.  So I had to buy more fruit, to their delight.  Is is time to fire up the jam factory again?

The vellum made me think of the steam in the kitchen from those big pots of boiling water. Peaches have been fabulous here as well. It’s a darling card and I do love that jar set.
