Sunday road trip back through history

Bishop Hill

On Sunday we spent the day in Bishop Hill, a tiny town in west central Illinois where a group of Swedish immigrants in search of religious freedom founded a utopian community in the mid-1800s.  Actually, we spent most of the day in the car (“Have we really been on the trail two and a half hours?”) taking the scenic route there and home.

Most times when we visit Bishop Hill it is steaming hot, but it was a beautiful, warmish day — perfect for walking around town and taking in the museums and historic buildings.

Once again I was struck by the passion and commitment preservationists have for their subject.  This picture is the sanctuary of the Colony Church.
